The Effect of a Mobile Classroom on Student Motivation and Confidence in Second Language Learning on Peace Boat |
単著 |

金城学院大学論集 |
This paper investigates language learner motivation and confidence in a “mobile classroom”, or rather, a classroom on a boat where the students take regular classes, but the students encounter new English language environments as the boat changes ports around the world. Using a questionnaire with aspects taken from the Language Contact Profile (Freed, Dewey, Segalowits, & Halter, 2004), the questionnaire was administered after the end of a voyage. The results of the survey revealed that participants often acted different from their stated language learning goals of joining the on-board English program to learn English for use in ports, but instead primarily using English on the ship instead. Additionally, confidence speaking English did increase among the participants, and the English teacher was cited as being a major factor. |
A Case Study on Student Confidence in a Childhood Education Teacher Training Program in Japan in Light of 2020 Elementary School English Class Reform |

金城学院大学論集 |
In 2020, English will become a required subject in Japanese elementary schools (MEXT, 2014b). This is a massive shift from earlier policy, and puts a new burden on elementary school teachers who must implement the curriculum, but have no English pedagogical training. This case study examines an existing elementary school training program for undergraduates at a Japanese university, and its impact on student confidence to teach under the new English policy. The results indicate the curriculum had a positive impact on confidence, though confidence still remained low. Also, additional practical training for students to mobilize their knowledge could improve teaching programs. |
Utilizing CLIL in a Japanese Elementary School Art Classroom: An Analysis of Student Perceptions of Teaching English and Foreign Culture Through Art |

JAAL in JACET Proceedings, Vol. 2 (referreed) |
This research explored the application of CLIL in teaching English in a Japanese elementary school. This study investigated the potential of using CLIL in elementary schools by teaching an art class focused on Norwegian trolls in a 4th grade, Japanese public school classroom. The research questions focused on (1) were students overwhelmed by doing art in English and (2) were students able to learn content and make comparisons between Norwegian trolls and Japanese ogres (oni). The results of a questionnaire survey administered at the end of the lesson indicted that using English was challenging for the students, but they thoroughly enjoyed the class and were not overwhelmed. Speaking in English was identified as the most difficult part of the lesson. Students also indicated on the survey that they learned content about cultural differences, but the specifics were inconclusive. |

金城学院大学論集 |
This research concerns the impact of a short-term study abroad sojourn on the confidence and willingness to communicate (WTC) of Japanese university students studying English as a L2. In this study, nine participants completed a pre and post-sojourn quantitative survey, and three were randomly selected for interviews. The participants were students in a four-year private university enrolled in a teacher-training major and studying to become elementary school and junior high school (English) teachers upon graduation. The results from the surveys suggest that anxiety related to speaking English was reduced, and that confidence and WTC increased after the sojourn. The participants also reported that interacting with children at their teaching practicum as well as their peer-partners seemed to be major reasons for this change. |

Teaching & Learning Languages Virtually: A Workshop on the Online Synchronous Pilot & Asynchronous Courses at The New School |
2017年 4月 |
The New School, NY, USA |
While working at the New School, I was selected to join a team and create a new online curriculum for languages at the New School. For this pilot program, I used my knowledge of teaching Japanese to adapt in-person techniques to online. The online classroom requires different skills from the teacher, and has to engage the students in a different way as well. This presentation was to present our findings on the team, and engage in discussion with other professors conducting online language courses. Marie-Christine Massé, Sara Villa, Daisy Bow, J. Creating a Communicative Teaching Environment in an Online Synchronous Japanese Classroom |
2019年 5月 |
外国語教育メディア学会(LET) 第 93 回(2019 年度春季) 中部支部研究大会 |
Teaching in an online, synchronous (live) classroom creates unique challenges such as maintaining student focus and encouraging student interaction when all members of the class are in different physical locations. In this session, the presenter will detail his own experience teaching both elementary Japanese I and II course online to college students. With research showing that current students prefer problem solving and group work as opposed to lectures, and connecting course content to the real world, the presenter will show collaborative exercises to enhance the communicative aspect of the classroom while allowing the teacher to step back and take the roll of facilitator rather than instructor. Tools include blogs, live collaborative games, shared group work quizzes, and online language partners. In this session the researcher will share tools he uses to enhance his online, synchronous Japanese classroom. |
